Family Matters reveals the political as deeply personal in a series of short experimental films exploring themes of marriage, divorce and raising children. (work in progress)

Told in three parts, each film in the trilogy will be up to five minutes long, with a total running time of fifteen minutes. The films will employ a first person narrative, using a combination of digital video, archival footage, still photographs, and scanned objects to create a poetic visual aesthetic. The films will have an experimental feel to them, but with a strong narrative structure. They will be made so they can be screened independently or as part of a whole.

Part I: Excessive Force
Excessive Force explores the filmmaker’s marriage to a deputy sheriff and subsequent divorce, as it confluences with larger social events.

Part II: Family Law
Family Law begins where Excessive Force left off, following the aftermath of divorce within the context of the family law court system.

Part III: Flying Solo
Flying Solo explores the filmmaker’s life as a single mother, the legacy she is leaving her daughter, and the grace she learns to rely upon.
